Engineering Design Process

What is it?

The engineering design process is a series of steps that guides professionals in many different careers in solving real-world problems. These steps include: Define the Problem, Brainstorm Solutions, Research Solutions, Plan, Build, Test, Improve Solutions, and Communicate results.

The design process is iterative, meaning that steps are repeated as many times as needed, making improvements along the way as  learning from failure occurs and therefore helps to uncover new design possibilities to arrive at great solutions.

Why use it in Additive Manufacturing?

The engineering design process is important for additive manufacturing and 3D printing careers. The engineering design process helps professionals identify potential design flaws and allows for testing of the 3D printed object to ensure that it meets the desired requirements. Additionally, the engineering design process helps to optimize the 3D printing process, which can help improve efficiency and reduce costs.
