Materials Processing for 3D Printing

3D printing empowers designers to rapidly design, manufacture, and test prototypes for a wide range of industries.

An overlooked aspect of 3D printing is aligning the type of material the object and type of printer to the intended use.

For example, a designer is creating a new part to be used on an aircraft carrier that will be 3D printed to save costs. This part needs to be made from materials that are waterproof and able to withstand saltwater exposure.

Prior to starting the manufacturing process on the 3D printer, the designer should use design thinking in their sketching and digital design phases to ensure the printed item is compatible with the material.
